Jim | October 2020

Date October 2, 2020 Author adoptontarioca Categories Monthly Profile
Back

It's true that the sea lives in every one of us. In Jim's case, he is most at home when underwater. He takes swimming lessons and loves any time spent in the water. When on dry land, you’re likely to find this happy, outgoing young man giggling (and you’ll likely find yourself laughing along). He dances gleefully with his foster mom. Jim is expanding the foods he enjoys, and will willingly try new foods as long as they are cut into small pieces for him. He sleeps through the night, often playing with toys or bouncing on his bed before falling asleep. Recently, he played on the local special needs’ hockey team.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Personality Academics

Jim is a delightful, giggly little guy. He has so much joy to share with his adoptive family! He enjoys tapping his feet and getting into the groove of the music with his foster mom. It is so hard not to laugh along with this happy young man who will have you permanently smiling.

Jim currently attends school a couple days per week; he travels by taxi. When not in school, Jim attends an intensive program aimed at maximizing his development. Jim has the support of a 1:1 Educational Assistant and an Individual Education Plan. The school will be looking at some augmented speech options to assist Jim in daily communication. The developmental and educational team continue to review and balance programming to optimize Jim’s learning potential. Jim enjoys and learns best with sensory stimulation. While Jim does not communicate verbally, he picks up on verbal instructions with ease. He lets others know his needs by using gestures, some sign language, and thumbs up/down. He really enjoys attending outings with his classmates!

Openness Special Considerations

Jim’s adoptive parents will need to support his ongoing relationship with his birth father with an update letter and photo once a year.

While Jim does not communicate verbally, he picks up on verbal instructions with ease. He lets others know his needs by using gestures, some sign language, and thumbs up/down. Jim benefits from constant supervision for his safety. He appears to have a very high pain tolerance, which makes it difficult for his caregivers to know if he is ill or hurt. He requires assistance with age appropriate day-to-day self-care tasks. He will go to his caregivers to have his needs met and express frustration when they are not. Caregivers soothe him by rubbing his hair and kissing his cheeks. Jim receives speech and occupational therapy services to assist him with communication skills. He will continue to require development supports potentially long-term. Jim is not comfortable around people who express themselves using their hands or move too quickly.

Matching Considerations Questions?

Jim will do well with a single parent or two-parent family that is accepting of neurological differences and willing to learn about his unique needs. Jim will require his future family to provide him with the supervision he needs to stay safe. He will need strong advocates for necessary services in schooling and in the community. Jim will share his joy and sweet laugh with his adoptive family.
