Adoption Resource Events (ARE)

What is an ARE?

Adoption Resource Events (ARE) are adoption events that allow prospective adoptive parents to connect with waiting children and youth in care. Children’s Aid Societies (CAS) across Ontario present waiting children and youth through written profiles, pictures, and videos. CAS staff are available to speak to prospective adoptive parents in more detail about the children and youth and answer questions that attendees may have.

The Provincial ARE is typically held twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, and is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Provincial AREs are open to all prospective adoptive parents across Ontario. When in person, the Provincial ARE is hosted in the Greater Toronto Area. More recently, the Provincial ARE has been hosted virtually through a secure third-party platform.

AdoptOntario also hosts Regional AREs that are geographically based and held a few times a year in various areas of the province. These events are hosted alongside the participating region. The criteria to attend a Regional ARE is decided by the hosting region and AdoptOntario. There are many factors that are considered when deciding on criteria for these events. The Regional AREs operate in the same manner as a Provincial ARE; however, the Provincial AREs are much larger in scale.

In addition to the Provincial and Regional AREs, AdoptOntario hosts a number of smaller, targeted virtual Online Adoption Events throughout the year to connect waiting children and youth with prospective adoptive parents across the province. You can find a listing of our upcoming Online Adoption Events and Child and Youth Profile Nights by visiting this page.

What to Expect at an ARE

The ARE provides an extensive amount of information and resources for prospective adoptive parents.  We recommend bringing either a partner or a family/friend member for support, if you have never attended an adoption event before.

It should be noted that CAS workers presenting children and youth at these events typically only consider AdoptReady applicants. With that being said, there is a variety of information and resources available at AREs for all pre-adoptive parents. If you are just starting the adoption process or would simply like to find out more about your options, please contact the Adoption Council of Ontario or join us for one of our How To Adopt sessions.

As mentioned above, the AREs provide additional adoption and post-adoption information and supports. At an ARE, the Resource Village includes a panel of experts and foster/adoptive parents ready to share their experiences and information on various needs such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Additionally, representatives from various organizations will be available for you to speak to, including the Adoption Council of Ontario (ACO) and their award-winning program, AdoptOntario and other partners of the ACO.

The ARE Online Platform

What is the ARE Online Platform and how does it work?

The ARE Online Platform is a feature that allows AdoptReady attendees to view profiles, pictures, and videos (if available) of the children and youth being presented at the ARE. Prospective adoptive parents should be aware that the ARE Online Platform is different than the Waiting Children Listing. The Waiting Children Listing is a year-round virtual public profiling of children and youth that is specific to AdoptOntario recruitment. The ARE Online Platform is a feature only offered during AdoptOntario’s adoption events. It usually profiles a larger number of children and youth and is available for a limited time.

Typically, the ARE Online Platform is available to AdoptReady attendees prior to the event. This helps prospective adoptive parents to prepare for the event by developing informed questions for the CAS workers in advance. Prospective adoptive parents are able to feel confident going to the event knowing that they are organized and equipped with the information they need. Additionally, the ARE Online Platform is a great way for AdoptReady attendees who are unable to attend the event to access the profiles of the children and youth being presented.

Along with providing information about the children and youth being presented, the ARE Online Platform is where prospective adoptive parents have the opportunity to complete and send expression of interest forms from the comfort of their own home. If you do not have access to the ARE Online Platform for an event you are attending, you can still express interest in a child, youth or sibling group by filling out a manual expression of interest form here.

If you wish to learn more information about a child or youth that you had previously viewed on the ARE Online Platform, please speak to your adoption professional directly. Your adoption professional will use their discretion in relaying further information about the child or youth that was profiled at the ARE.
